Now, a fresh investigation by The New York Times has pushed that question back into the spotlight. Their latest report suggests that Adam Back could be the strongest candidate yet behind the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto.

But before jumping to conclusions there’s still no solid proof.

Why Adam Back Is Being Talked About Again

The investigation wasn’t rushed. It reportedly took over a year and involved digging through old internet forums, emails, and cypherpunk discussions.

What stood out?

Adam Back wasn’t just close to Bitcoin’s ideas he was working on similar concepts years before Bitcoin even existed.

One key piece is Hashcash. It’s a system Back created that uses proof-of-work the same concept that later became the backbone of Bitcoin. In fact, Hashcash was directly referenced in Bitcoin’s original white paper.

That doesn’t prove anything on its own. But it puts Back in a very small group of people who had the knowledge to build something like Bitcoin.

The Interesting Patterns Found

The report points to multiple similarities between Back’s early writings and Bitcoin’s design.
